plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose
About 7 months ago, I started buying a monthly T pass, and taking the train to work. I was suffering some exhaustion symptoms, and the first obvious cause was the 4+ miles I was putting on my feet daily. (It turns out that the exhaustion culprit was more dietary, certain kinds of carbs) Being able to jump on a bus or train whenever I felt like doing so was a nice side effect... It certainly made some errand logistics easier. Since then, I've become somewhat disillusioned with using the T... Partly because of service irregularities, partly the Big Brother Bullshit they seem to do occasionally with random bag searches. (I have nothing to hide... however, THAT DOES NOT GIVE YOU PIGS THE RIGHT TO CHECK FOR NO GODDAMNED REASON. DHS fear mongering about terrorist attacks doesn't cut it.) Lastly, and probably most importantly, I have better things to do with 60 bucks every month. So... I declined to buy another pass yesterday, and resolved to start walking to work again. The distance isn't horrible, and I only had to leave 5 minutes earlier than train-usual to make it to work on time. The walk still felt familiar, even after the months inbetween... I even saw faces that were regular markers in time-space previously on my commute. plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, indeed. | | Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | | 11:49 pm |
New maille!
I recently completed a necklace for s00j , and the pics were delivered this evening. The necklace was completed 15 March, 2009. Ring count estimated at 1100. The pics can be found on my public Facebook gallery. Feel free to comment here on LJ, or on Facebook. | | Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 | | 11:15 am |
Webcomics, catching up, and xkcd
Once upon a time (in... 03?), I became aware of the big world of webcomics. I looked at a bunch of them, read a couple start to finish, then entombed the idea of keeping them in my life. I was concerned that my (previously stronger) OCD tendencies would effectively end my life if I got into the habit of reading webcomics; there are an awful lot of them out there. So after an IM discussion last night, I was compelled to reassess that idea, as I am a very different person from the one that chose to swear off webcomics 6-ish years ago. xkcd comes up in meatspace convos more than most, so it seemed like a good place to start. I don't do anything half assed, so I began at the beginning... Upon that road, I found this: http://xkcd.com/137/Makes a strong statement about the homogenized culture that permeates a lot of America, and it rings true with me. --S | | Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 | | 8:44 pm |
On prophets, and juju of the hands
This last Sunday (8Mar) I was at work helping a guy, showing him pens. Then out of the blue he asks me if I play guitar (based on simply looking at my hands). I said no, but I do use my hands for crafty things. I found this bordering on prophetic, for a variety of reasons... I have long entertained the idea of playing guitar, but haven't ever gotten it off the back burner. More recently I've been harboring a strong urge to beat on a drum, which has brought the guitar urge up from the cellar. Drumming has been high on the list of things to do, but has kept getting passed over by more critical things (moving, maille). Just a day before that, I had spent the evening at Pandemonium Books listening to s00j sing songs tied into Cat Vallente's book Palimpsest. (which was awesome... if you weren't there, ya missed out) For no reason I can discern, the whole pursuing the Musician's Path seems more real to me now, like something that I can really do myself. On the note of maille, I recently set a short deadline for myself. This was partly necessity, for convenience of delivery... partly just to see if I could make the deadline without stressing or cramming. The shiny progesses smoothly, and will be completed well within deadline, provided that rocks don't fall, and everyone survives. ^_^ | | Sunday, November 9th, 2008 | | 10:14 pm |
